The brightest students of the University of Miskolc welcomed spring with memorial medals for the excellent results achieved in the previous semester. “It is a significant addition to my educational profile, which I am sure it will help me on the start of my career”, told me Mustahsan Abbasi, a student of the Faculty of Earth Science and Engineering. Just like the other international students who were granted medals, Mustahsan is very grateful for the University’s appreciation.

The ceremony took place on March 15th. Memorial medals were granted for students of the Faculty of Earth Science and Engineering, as well as for students of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Informatics, and for the students of the Faculty of Materials Science and Engineering. We asked some of the awardees about their impressions on receiving the medals.

Hernan Aguilar from Ecuador is pursuing a Master’s Degree at the Faculty of Earth Science and Engineering. He received a Silver Medal.

“I would like to thank the University of Miskolc for this award, as a recognition to all the students for their academic performance during their study period. This award is for me a stimulus to keep forward on my academic path and personal growth. It is a truly satisfaction that all the effort invested on something is eventually recognized. We get to understand that sometimes it is necessary to sacrifice other things in order to achieve certain goals. Sometimes things are harder than we expect and maybe they do not work exactly in the way we want. Nevertheless, the important thing is to never give up on our goals and dreams, always working hard and supporting one another”, told me Hernan.

Regarding the academic program, Hernan said that sometimes it could get hard to fulfill all the requirements, as it is a well-known fact that the Faculty of Earth Science has the reputation of having harder programs than other faculties. “It gets more difficult close to the examination period, when we have to survive taking one test after another, sometimes even on the same day, considering that we have more than 10 subjects per semester.”

Hernan told us that his international experience here has been great so far. “It wasn’t an easy task to come from a different continent, being far from home and from the dear ones. Luckily, I have met wonderful people from around the globe with whom I had the chance to travel around Europe and not only. I was also lucky to learn about their cultures, which helped me realize that we are not so different after all. We share the same desire of succeeding and achieving greater goals in our professional and personal life.”

Mustahsan Abbasi came from Pakistan and he is also pursuing a Master’s Degree at the Faculty of Earth Science. He received a Golden Medal

“I see this award as a new milestone in my life. It is a significant addition to my educational profile, which I am sure it will help me on the start of my career”, Mustahsan thinks. “I think the program is good enough to prepare students to handle professional challenges. What I liked the most was the program’s focus on practical applications and working on real life projects, such as making reports or evaluating various scenarios.” Overall, he is convinced that this has been a very good experience for him: “Meeting people all over the world is a thing I always yearned for. I feel lucky to have classmates from 5 different continents and be able to discover the way they are perceiving life.”

Taqwah Eman comes from Pakistan too and she is pursuing a Master’s Degree at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Informatics. She was awarded a Silver Medal.

“It is an honor and a privilege at the same time to be acknowledged for my hard work. The university is motivating the students to give their best to the studies and expand their educational horizons”, the student thinks.

Regarding the program, she says this was for her a great learning experience designed specifically neither to be so hard, nor too easy. “I think it is a perfect blend of academia and extra-curricular activities with a special emphasis on the inclusion of international students in the Hungarian culture. It has been an amazing ride so far. This program has given me the opportunity to interact with people from diverse cultures and lifestyles. It has polished my self-confidence and interpersonal skills. It has been a wonderful journey and I feel blessed to be a part of it.”

Pablo Echevarría is an MSc student coming from Argentina. He was awarded a Golden Medal

“It was a big surprise; I haven’t known that the university awards this kind of medals until I got it. I was happy with it, of course, especially because some of my classmates were awarded medals too”, Pablo says.

Now that Pablo is getting closer to the end of the program, he thinks some things could have been differently, such as having more classes that are practical, more fieldtrips, and more lab work. He would appreciate the program as being neither difficult, nor easy. Nevertheless, his experience has been great so far: “I am finishing the MSc program with an academic recognition, working on an interesting thesis topic, but most importantly I made friends from all over the world! From Ecuador to Mongolia, many people taught me a lot of things.”
